FUZZY'S FUZZY VIEW

Leeds United maintained an unbeaten record at the Keepmoat with a 1:2 win over Doncaster Rovers, but it could easily have been very different.

As is sadly tradiotional in the League Cup, Leeds rested six of their first team players so Kisnorbo, Lonergran, Gradel, Snodgrass, Lees and Clayton did not start.  Donny were of course without Sharp, Stock, O'Connor, Woods, Coppinger and Mason so we can both claim not full strength teams.

Rovers lept out of the traps and were a goal in front after just 2 minutes.  A cross was drilled to the near post by Barnes and James Hayter did well turning the ball in from the corner of the 6 yard box while off balance.  A superb start for the Rovers striker in his first game back after being stretchered off the field on the opening day and more evidence if ever it were needed that Rovers need a preditory striker on the field.

For the next 25 minutes Donny set about Leeds and during this period their dominance was illustrated by the possession statistics which stood at 81% to 19% in the home-side's favour.

As well as possession, Donny were also racking up the shot count.  Naylor was found unmarked by Barnes but his header was saved; Bennett caught Howson in possession and drew another decent save; a nice touch from Naylor then allowed Gillett to bring another good save from Rachubka after he'd brought the ball down brilliantly.  The Leeds 'Keeper was having a great debut.

Then Rovers should have made it two.  A quick break saw Gillett play the ball into Bennetts path and the Rovers starlet was 1 on 1 with Rachubka.  Unfortunately his flick past the 'keeper found the inside of the post and rebounded traight back to the Leeds 'keeper.

It was a bit of a turning point as from that moment, Leeds started for the first time to have some say in the game.  Their goal came on the half hour mark from nothing but was brilliantly taken by Ramoan Nunez.  Rachubka's clearance flicked on by Keogh and Nunez with a great volley past Woods from the edge of the area.

Half-time and and it was a half of two halves.  Doncaster dominance followed by a much more even game.

And after the break so it continued. The excellent Kyle Bennett had another good effort saved by Rachubka when he latched onto Dumbuya's flick and then he drifted in from the left wing before firing just over.  But Leeds were having more of the game now with Keogh being wasteful from a Nunez pull back and then Gradell, on for McCormack being in on goal but hitting over the bar.

Rovers still fancied the win and Wilson hit a shot that moved in the air making Rachubka decide that discretion was the better part of valour and push it out for a corner.

Leeds' winner came after 83 minutes and it was another scorcher from Nunez.  A cross deflected off Spurr and bounced invitingly in front of Nunez for him to volley home.  An excellent finish but Rovers should look at how much space a player wo hd already struck from that kind of range had been allowed.

It ended the scoring although it might not have done as both sides had their chances.  First it was Bennet again who saws his chance to shoot and caught the outside of the post.   Then at the death, it was Bennet making his only mistake of the game, hitting a free-kickinto the wall and then being caught out by Gradel.  The Leeds midfielder broke quickly and tried to take the ball around Woods but the Doncaster 'keeper flicked the ball away from his feet before regaining position to make an easy save from the rebound.

A great game and from a Rovers point of view, very encouraging to see Hayter return and first O'Connor and then Stock come off the bench.  A sign of happier times to come?

OTHER VIEWS

That's four out of the last five games we've been the same. Things have disappointed me an it drives me up the wall. We're capable of much more. - Sean O'Driscoll

He's done nothing to justify being out of the team. He has a great technique and works hard for the team. He put in a performance telling me I should pick him. - Simon Grayson

...had Paul Rachubka not had such an impressive debut in the visitors’ goal, it is highly likely that it would have been Rovers looking forward to the third round draw and not Leeds. - Richard Sutcliffe - Yorkshire Post

Rovers will be disappointed to go out but the return of James Hayter, Brian Stock, James O`Connor and Shelton Martis gives the fans something as they now get ready for a home championship game with Bristol City on Saturday. - Vital Donny

Football is a results based game, no matter how well or how pretty we played, we lost. A win tonight would have geed everyone for the weekend. As it is it's back to the drawing board. - Bally (ja606)

Should have been out of sight after 25 minutes, Naylor missed a free header at the back stick and Bennet, hitting the post with only the keeper to beat, Leeds scored with probably there only meaningful attempts on goal, same old story for us, missed chances costing us. But I`m not downbeat, I saw enough tonight to show we`ve got some fight in us, great to see the injured players making a return, and also to see Billy before the game walking across the pitch without his crutches, he still had the boot on mind!  - Filo (VSC)

Well we took our chances they didn't. That's why we won today me think. Not a good game, a bit boring. But we got the win and that makes me a happy man - NorwayLeedsforever (ja606)

We weren't at our best tonight, but we played half a reserve side and still won. - Proud to be Leeds (ja606)
